Lockout Tagout is a safety procedure in which all energy sources of machines and installations are isolated, locked, and marked for the relevant maintenance or repair activities. Within this procedure, two distinct terms are used: Lockout and Tagout.
Lockout
Lockout involves locking the various types of installations and energy isolation points. This includes, for example, locking handwheel valves, gas cylinders, electrical installations, or valves. As a result, the equipment cannot be switched on during maintenance or repair work.
Tagout
Tagout indicates that work is in progress. This is usually done using highly durable tags. These visual tags provide on-site information about the activities, such as the responsible person(s), what is being done, the reason, the duration, a reference number, and a brief work description.
